Don’t let itching or scratching cast a shadow over your summer -- your kitchen may hold the cure to whatever ails you! From home remedies for soothing sunburns and itch relief, to homemade beauty treatments, you can solve your own problems naturally without ever leaving home.

Bug Bites

Mosquitoes, gnats, and chiggers are just a few common summer bugs that can be a big pain.

Quick relief can be found in your kitchen:

  • A cool, damp green tea bag will soothe the itch and reduce inflammation.
  • Rub a basil leaf on the bite; basil has anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Peppermint -- a dab of toothpaste, a drop of essential oil, or a fresh leaf straight from the plant can all do the trick.
  • Pinching; your brain can only focus on one type of pain at a time so a quick pinch will take your mind off the itch.

Think your children are safe in your home? Learn about these common poisons you may never have considered.

As a mother, my most important job is to keep my children safe. If they are not in my presence, I never stop worrying and wondering about what they may be getting in to. It is, in fact, a full time job. We can do everything in our power to keep them out of the street and from falling off of their bikes, but what about the other hazards that we so commonly forget about--the ones right in our homes?

Introducing Stay Away®: The First Natural Pest Prevention Line

A reason for natural pest prevention

Repellency is a natural force.  Plants and animals have evolved characteristics that repel predators and other sources of harm to ensure their survival.  The smell of urine from predatory animals has deterred smaller prey animals from trespassing in dangerous territory.  Prickly spines on a cactus have protected its stored water from competitors.  Nature never needed to create toxic, synthetic compounds to solve problems, so why should we?

Ants, moths, rodents and spiders are often labeled as pests because they are a nuisance to people.  Pest is defined as:  a destructive insect or other animal that attacks crops, food, livestock, etc.  Although "pests" can cause problems for us, they are a part of the larger ecosystem and serve important roles.  Killing these animals and insects creates other problems, such as disrupting food chains, as well as exposing people and non-target wildlife to dangerous poisons.

Protecting your health and property from the dangers of pests, as well as educating you about pest behaviors to reduce the need to use toxic chemicals in the home is our passion at earthkind®.

Green is the new black.

Or at least that's what you might think, the way everyone is clamoring to be eco-friendly.  Concern about the impact the products we use may have on the environment and concern over the effects commercial chemicals may have on our health might influence your decision to make the switch to 'natural,' 'green,' and 'eco-friendly' products.  Reducing, reusing, and recycling have never been more popular.  Going green can change the way you shop, the way you eat, the way you get around, the way you clean your house, and even the way you deal with a mouse.

The problem with pests.

Finding a mouse in your house is never a good thing.  Rodents carry disease, damage property, and are just generally undesirable.  Rodent related damages can include but are not limited to:

Read the Story about an Owl Killed by Rat Poison

Posted by Becky Smith

Feb 13, 2013 10:05:00 AM

Today we thought instead of writing a blog, we would share a tragic story that we hear of way too often. This story was found on facebook.

When you put out poison to get rid of mice, you are also putting area pets in harm as well as many birds that will eat the dead or dying rodent. The poison you laid out to get rid of the mouse can also kill the neighbor’s dog or cat or a wonderful bird of prey like owls, hawks and even bald eagles.

Read this story, it is so powerful:

Owl_sickend_by_poisoned_mouse

I died today.
I was found by a kind, sweet woman who does wildlife rescue.
I was so sick, I could barely open my eyes.
She took me inside, cradling me in her warm arms, and made me warm and comfortable.
I opened my eyes and looked at her and thanked her for making my last few minutes as comfortable as possible.
But i was too sick to keep fighting anymore.
I had eaten a mouse that was poisoned, and it made me very sick.
I closed my yellow eyes for the last time and went somewhere else.
please, all I ask is never use poison to kill the mice.
poison kills owls, like me.
All I wanted was a mouse for dinner.
I died today....
