How to Get Rid of Mice From Your Home Permanently and Safely

When you first discover that a mouse has gotten into your home your first instinct might be to panic and start setting traps.  Of course traps can pose a threat to your household pets and any small children that might be living with you or who might visit regularly.  Even the humane traps that keep the mice alive can be dangerous if you aren't careful.

Thankfully there are plenty of ways that you can get rid of mice that do not involve catching or killing anything!

Seal Your House

If you discover a mouse, the first thing you need to do is figure out how the heck the thing got into your home in the first place!  Do a thorough inspection of your home and seal any holes or cracks that you find. You want to cut the mouse off at every point of entry.  If he can't' find a way in, you don't have to worry about what to do with him!

Clean Your House Thoroughly

The trick is to make your home as uninviting to the mouse as you possibly can.  Mice like homes with lots of good smells, good tastes and places to hide.

Clean your house as thoroughly as possible.  Store all of your food in sealable containers and keep those containers closed tight.  Keep your home free of clutter and debris and do your best to keep everything organized.

If the mice can't smell anything inviting, they will be less likely to try to come in.

If they cannot find any place to hide safely once they get inside, they will be less likely to stick around.

Wipe down your counters and floors.  You don't want to leave any crumbs or other tiny tasty morsels for these pests to find.  It sounds like a lot of work, we know, but which would you rather deal with: taking ten minutes to clean your counters and sweep your floors every night or spending days or weeks trying to track down a mouse (or many mice) and get rid of him?

Invest in a Rodent Repellent

One of the best ways to get rid of mice is to discourage them from entering your home in the first place.  In addition to sealing your home and keeping it clean, one of the best ways to do this is to invest in a rodent repellent.

Rodent repellents (like Stay Away®) are designed to make your house smell unpalatable to the mouse. Thankfully this does not mean that the house has to smell terrible to you.  Many of the plant based rodent repellents act as natural room deodorizers and air fresheners!

More importantly, unlike other types of rodent repellents or poisons, when you choose an environmentally friendly repellent, you do not have to worry about the risk you might be posing to your pets or to your kids or grandkids.

Remember to be vigilant.  You don't want to have to get rid of mice.  You want to keep them from coming into your home at all!
