If you’ve noticed rodent activity like droppings, gnaw marks or nests around your home, it’s time to start looking for a way to remove these pests from your space.
One of the more recent developments in the pest control industry is the ultrasonic mouse repeller. These devices work by sending ultrasonic sound waves through the air that are meant to send mice running. The advantage of this method is that it doesn’t require using any harsh chemicals within your home. However, the question often comes up, do they really work?
How These Devices Work
Typically, the repellent device is plugged into an electrical outlet anywhere homeowners have noticed a pest infestation. The electricity generates ultrasonic waves that are beamed into the area and when a rodent travels into the path of the waves, they can feel them and hear them. The manufacturers claim that the electromagnetic technology creates a high-frequency sound that is unpleasant to pests, and the discomfort causes them to leave the area. However, the sounds are supposed to be out of range for human hearing.
Potential Problems with Ultrasonic Pest Repellers
Scientific evidence for ultrasonic devices is mixed. Additionally, reviews for these types of products often suggest the repellers do not always solve mouse and other pest problems. Many consumers actually find ultrasonic rodent repellents to be completely ineffective.
Homeowners will likely need to place several units throughout multiple rooms around the house since the sound waves from these devices cannot go through walls or furniture. In order to keep the waves moving, placing several in the same area is the recommendation; however, this can get expensive.
Along with the high costs, there are other possible issues with electronic rodent repellers:
- Finding a place to put the device can be a problem: Any object in front of the repeller will prevent ultrasonic waves from reaching rodents.
- You may have the perfect spot to plug in the ultrasonic repeller, but if that isn’t where the rodents are traveling, the repeller will be completely ineffective. It may be difficult to determine how many of the ultrasonic repellers you need for your area.
- It could get difficult to know when the product needs to be replaced since the sound is inaudible. And, even though it’s inaudible to you, it could be causing discomfort for your pets.
- If your pest problem is an enclosed area without electricity, like a shed, you won’t be able to use an ultrasonic repeller to get rid of the rodents.
