EarthKind® Becomes Climate Neutral Certified, Leaping Bunny Certified and Earns USDA Biobased Status

EarthKind® achieves three new environmental certifications for its innovative plant-based pest prevention products, raising sustainability standards in the industry.

With its climate-neutral achievement, EarthKind has successfully measured and offset its 2020 carbon footprint and is working to reduce future emissions. Climate Neutral Certified is the leading consumer label designating carbon neutrality. It is carried by brands that have voluntarily stepped up to take responsibility for the greenhouse gas emissions generated in the production, operations, and shipping of their goods and services.

“EarthKind and our other Climate Neutral Certified brands are leading the global shift to a net-zero economy by doing what all companies should be doing immediately: measuring, offsetting, and reducing their carbon emissions,” says Climate Neutral CEO, Austin Whitman. “Our label helps consumers identify these brands. It’s a recognizable and trusted symbol that turns everyday purchases into meaningfully positive climate action.”

Additionally, under Cruelty-Free International’s rigorous Leaping Bunny Program, the leading international organization working to eliminate animal testing worldwide, all of EarthKind’s plant-based Stay Away® products have been approved as 100% cruelty-free certified. This means that no animal testing is used in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories, or ingredient suppliers.

“To become cruelty-free certified within an industry that’s known to function primarily through harmful, poison and kill methods is a groundbreaking achievement,” remarks Kari Warberg Block, CEO/Founder of EarthKind®, “This certification showcases that with innovation and a commitment to working in harmony with nature, effective, safer solutions to pest control can be achieved.”

Further, EarthKind’s Stay Away® Moths, Spiders, Ants, and Cockroaches repellents are now certified as 100% Biobased, and its Stay Away® Rodent and Fresh Cab® Botanical Rodent Repellent are both 98% Biobased. Third-party verification for a product’s biobased content is administered through the USDA BioPreferred Program, an initiative created by the 2002 Farm Bill (and recently reauthorized by the 2018 Farm Bill). One of the goals of the BioPreferred Program is to increase the development, purchase, and use of biobased products.

“To be able to display a unique USDA label that distinguishes our products as utilizing 98 and 100 percent biobased content, again, in an industry that tends to use highly toxic, poison-and-kill based ingredients, is a huge win for EarthKind®,” adds Warberg Block, “With this achievement, we are one step closer to creating a World of Harmony with nature and one another in all the places we live, work, learn and play.”

The USDA Certified Biobased Product label displays the portion of a product that comes from a renewable source, such as plant, animal, marine, or forestry feedstocks. Utilizing renewable, biobased materials displaces the need for non-renewable petroleum-based chemicals. Biobased products, through petroleum displacement, have played an increasingly important role in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that exacerbate global climate change. Biobased products are cost-comparative, readily available, and perform as well as or better than their conventional counterparts.

“We applaud EarthKind® for earning the USDA Certified Biobased Product label,” said Kate Lewis, USDA BioPreferred Program. “Products from EarthKind® are contributing to an ever-expanding marketplace that adds value to renewable agriculture commodities, creates jobs in rural communities, and decreases our reliance on petroleum.”

With products now available in Target stores nationwide, along with Costco, Grove Collaborative, Lowes, ACE Hardware, Tractor Supply, and online, these new certifications further EarthKind’s commitment to making it easier for consumers to identify, trust, and find safer, healthier, affordable, and effective pest control options across the country.

About the USDA BioPreferred Program and Certified Biobased Product label:
The BioPreferred Program is a USDA-led initiative that assists the development and expansion of markets for biobased products. The BioPreferred Program is transforming the marketplace for biobased products through two initiatives: mandatory purchasing requirements for Federal Agencies and Federal contractors and voluntary product certification and labeling.

Biobased products span a diverse range of applications, such as lubricants, cleaning products, chemicals, and bioplastics. The USDA Certified Biobased Product label communicates a product’s biobased content. Expressed as a percentage, biobased content is the ratio of non-fossil organic carbon (new organic carbon) to total organic carbon in a product. New organic carbon is derived from recently-created materials. The total organic carbon in a product consists of new organic carbon and old organic carbon that originates from fossil carbon materials, such as petroleum, coal, or natural gas. More than 3,500 products have earned the USDA Certified Biobased Product label.
