What Happened to Fresh Cab?

Fresh Cab Rodent Repellent first appeared on store shelves in 2007, after I faced a hell-raising battle with wild mice on our farm. Finding a way to prevent the damage these little invaders caused was just as challenging as the pesky pests themselves! Someone had to do something. So, I invented Fresh Cab. It was the first botanical rodent repellent to earn Federal EPA Registration for professional use!  (getting that done is a story unto itself!)

After celebrating our 10-year anniversary in 2017, we realized it was time to conduct a full review of our flagship product, Fresh Cab. Upon review, it came to our attention that the growing demand for natural solutions had left room for us to improve.

Why was Fresh Cab unavailable?

Pest control is a multibillion-dollar business. Pesticides and lethal traps have been the staples of this industry for decades, with good reason. Rodent infestations cause billions of dollars in damage each year, not to mention serious health risks like hantavirus. Getting rid of pests doesn’t always have to mean killing them, or exposing your family, pets, and the environment to hazardous chemicals.

Taking Fresh Cab off the market for a timeout was a tough decision. Elevating every stakeholder – from the farmers who grow our ingredients, to the federal EPA who reviews our science in great detail, to our employees, the retailers who sell it, and the environmental footprint we leave behind – is vital in our decision-making process.

  5. It refers to mice but I have rats living in my urban neighborhood that are currently stripping my Myer lemon and got 90 % of my peaches this past summer. Not sure how effective this would be and using it outdoors. They are in my backyard every night.

    • Our products are intended for indoor use and may not last long when exposed to outdoor conditions. Fresh Cab should work as well on rats as it does on mice, so please let us know how it works for you if you try it. We will look for some tips to help save your lemon tree and be sharing them soon.   7. Fresh Cab is a wonderful product that works very effectively. I just checked with my nearby Do It Best hardware store (the largest hardware here in Ohio – over 7 acres under one roof!) and they don’t have any word on when they expect to have it in stock again. I know I can order it here on the EarthKind website, but I don’t need it that quickly. (I use it under an air conditioner cover and also near some attic vents.)

    Also, I noticed the “Stay Away Mice” product is available in a 4 pack, but it appears that Fresh Cab is now only available in a 12 pouch handy pack, at least via the EarthKind online cart. Will the retail stores carrying the product have the old original 4 pack pouch boxes, or will they only be able to get 12 pouch packs for retail sale?

  9. Hooray, so happy it will be available again. I use in my camper and was so totally devestated when I couldn’t get this past fall. I called every implement dealer in a 30 mile radius and was told sorry by all. It’s the absolute best on the market.

  10. Oh my, I am so excited you are back! We never had mice in our cabin, deep in the north woods, until we couldn’t get Fresh Cab any more, and boy did we have a problem. We tried all kinds of tricks but nothing else worked. So happy it’s back! Does the new product last as long as the old one?

    • Jacie, Thank you for being a loyal Fresh Cab customer! The Fresh Cab formula hasn’t changed at all, just the package, so it will last the same amount of time as in the past. We did introduce a new mice repellent, Stay Away Mice, which works in the same with but with a slightly different scent. Both products are designed to work for at least 30 days, but often maintain their effectiveness for 60-90 days. I like to say that your ‘nose knows’ when it’s time to refresh the pouches, so just take a breath and see if the scent is still present. Thanks again!

  11. (1) If placed in a car trunk, will Cab Fresh help protect the engine and passenger areas? Honda has soy-based wiring that attracts mice, squirrels and chipmunks (thanks, Honda), and no, I don’t have a garage, or even a paved driveway.

    (2) Do you have a similar product that is effective in a semi-open area? Rustic shed, carport open at ends, etc.

    • Kathy,

      Fresh Cab should repel mice from other parts of the car when kept in the trunk. If the scent isn’t too overwhelming for you, you can keep pouches in the glove box or under the seats as well. Unfortunately we do not have a product for outdoor use. The Fresh Cab pouches would still help, but the scent will wear off much more quickly when used in areas with a high rate of air exchange.   12. I purchased my second box of Fresh Cab one week ago from Tractor Supply. I used it for my first time one year ago in our RV (Lived in full time), so I was expecting the same results as I after a hard to get mouse. My sticky trap got him this morning. As I went about cleaning out and sanitizing I discovered that one of the bags of fresh cab in a drawer had been chewed into by said mouse. REPELLENT?? Do I get refund from You or Tractor supply. I’m disappointed that it didn’t work this time and I really liked the smell of your product too.

  13. Was there a production/quality problem with the fresh cab that was shipped last summer before the production hiatus? I used it the year before in my RV over the winter of 2016-2017 and it worked perfectly. I used it again this past winter and wound up with mice. They even nested in a drawer where there were 2 packets of the stuff. Not sure what happened.

  14. I just bought a box of fresh cab. Is that two pkg in the box stapled together or is it just one. I took the staple off and it looks like to complete pkgs. Should I cut the pkgs of is just one long package.

      We do not recommend cutting the pouch into two separate parts. As packaged, one pouch should repel rodents from a 125 square feet area. If you do separate the pouch, it may only be effective in a smaller area.

  15. I put one pouch in the car on the front seat and the other one on the open garage in front of the car. Should I put the other one in the trunk? Where the Uframe is open the scent won’t last long.

  16. The new (2018) cab didnt work for me either 🙁 had much better results with the previous version. In 2018 i bought $100.00 of fresh cab bags but did not have the results i had to previous. Hey

  17. RITA.
    Please advise if anyone is developing a pouch directly intended for RATS. Rats totaled my ranch SUV by chewing its wires.
    I don’t have a mice problem.
    I’m hoping the enclosed spaces in my new suv will capture your pouch’s smell intensity enough to be effective on rats.

It’s a good one, however, we’re unable to share what our company may have in development, or be collaborating on with other companies, as EPA requires 100% confidentiality until a registration is complete. We always recommend calling in a local pest professional if the problem gets out of hand. Rats can be very difficult to control. Sorry we can’t help you on this one.

  18. Fresh Cab is the only repellent that we’ve found that gets pests out and keeps them out of our Motorhome and we have tried all the other tricks out there, Fresh Cab really works. It also serves nicely as an air freshener. Stay Away also works very well for the insects. We are very pleased with both products and would recommend them to anyone.   19. I was devastated !! The ONLY product I have found that works !!!! I tried something “close” haha what a nightmare ! I have poo everywhere and bad infest in our boat, camper and classic cars ! ? So excites that it is available again I swear by this product and ALWAYS recommend it to all ! Bless you all !

  20. Hi, I am wondering why your box says that if the pouch isn’t disposed of properly, it will attract ravenous mice. And I bought a box in june and put it under the kitchen cabinet and in about 2 weeks the smell was gone. It is supposed to be good for a month. Is that a month from manufacture? and if so, where is the date of manufacture?

    • Hi Mary,
      Fresh Cab is made from botanical oils and plant fibers, but once the scent from the oils have dissipated, mice could view the plant fibers as a food source. While very unlikely, it is a possibility which is why the warning is on the box. Although you may not notice the scent after 2 weeks, the highly sensitive noses of mice will. Our products have undergone multiple tests to confirm that they remain effective for 30 days or more after opening the package. Unopened Fresh Cab will maintain it’s freshness for at least 12 months past the date of manufacture, so you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.   21. Thank God you are back!! I tried to find your product every place last fall. As the fields are starting to come down. Now is the time the mice move in. They made my house total chaos this past fall, winter into the beginning of spring. I bought other natural deterrents and they were COMPLETE garbage!

    Nothing has worked as amazing as Fresh Cab. Plus, I love the smell. I am heading out to the store tomorrow to stock up. I put 8-12 packs out every month from September until March. I never have any type of mouse problem when I use your product. So glad I will not have a repeat of what happened last winter now that Fresh Cab is back!

  22. I would like to know if this product is safe to use in a lamb barn with ventilation. We raise show lambs which are fed grain which attracts mice. We don’t want to use a pesticide but need to keep the mice to a minimum if possible.

      Our products are made from ingredients that follow the GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) rules set by the U.S. FDA. There are no harmful chemicals and no known risks to worry about when using Fresh Cab. Just keep an eye out for any changes in behavior by animals in treated areas, and follow up with your veterinary expert if you have any additional concerns. Please let us know how it works for you.

  23. Warning:
    I have had a lot of problems with mice living in my motorcycle and have tried a few repellents. The old formulation of Fresh Cab had been highly recommended by several of my relatives, so I recently bought a package (in July of 2018) and put both pouches in my bike. A couple weeks later, I took my bike in for service and I just got a call from the mechanic. He said that the mice had tore the bags apart and eaten the contents, and had built a nest right beside one of them. I’m going to try mothballs next.

    You better try another reformulation.

It is highly unusual for mice to nest in areas where Fresh Cab is present, but mice are persistent pests and there may have been other factors such as intense competition for limited resources due to increased rodent population in the area or extreme predation by other species.       Thank you for your question. Fresh Cab is not currently for sale in Canada. This is due to recent changes to Canada’s regulations of products classified as repellents. However, we are working on offering Fresh Cab to our customers in Canada again soon!

  24. Any idea on how soon it will again be available in Canada? I’m in the Pest Control industry and I still have people calling and asking if it is back yet or if i know when it will be.
